happy halloween

Zombie Little Red Riding Hood costume, circa 2009

Josephine and Napleon-all handmade by my mother in law!

I hope you enjoy the above pictures!  The zombie was stuff I did for fun and out of boredom a few years ago.  And the Napoleon and Josephine costumes were made by my mother in law.  When my husband was in high school he had to do a report on Napoleon and wanted a costume to go with it.  My mother in law made him this and since then it has been worn for Halloween.  The Josephine dress was made for David's sister as a costume.  David and I dressed up like this, visited his grandma and then came back to his place...that's it.  No party or anything, this was just for fun.

Oh, bonus picture:

one year of marriage

David and I were married one year ago today.  I can't believe how fast the time has gone by.  Marriage is all I expected and more.  I learned a lot about myself, David and us as a couple.  I also learned a lot of new skills as a home owner:

  • managing more than my own income
  • meal planning
  • navigating large grocery stores for weekly trips
  • maintaining a water softener
  • making an insurance claim when said water softener fails and leaks water all over the basement
  • water proofing wood siding
  • building and keeping a fire in our wood stove
  • landscaping

We have had an amazing first year.  We spent time updating our house, made landscape plans, created a vegetable garden from scratch, managed to live internet/tv free, had weekend getaways, cooked together, made plans for the future and fallen in loooove even more.

halloween costumes

I never celebrated Halloween as a kid and still don't really do much for it.  I love all the neat decor, treats and costumes though!  I have been saving pictures on Pinterest of costumes I'd love to do if I ever went to a Halloween party.

Here are some of my favourites (for sources, please see the orginal image on Pinterest)!
Crazy Cat Lady

Ms. Frizzle from Magic School Bus

Darla From Finding Nemo

Alice in wonderland

Fairy Godmother from Cinderella

Mary Poppins

Silent movie stars

Do you have a favourite?  I love the cat lady!!  My family always joked that I have crazy cat lady potential, but I think having a husband overrides my cat lady potential!
I'd also love to dress up as a Disney princess, but a lot of the costumes for adult women are very revealing.  Plus, none of the princesses have short hair.

Hopefully I'll have the chance to dress up soon!

then&now: main bathroom

I've posted before about our bathroom makeover but we've done a bit more since then.  As you may remember, our bathroom was awful.  The first thing we did when we got possession of the house was to rip off all the bathroom wallpaper. We also replaced the toilet, painted everything and removed the sliding shower door.

this was another cluttered room in the house, which is never a good sign!  usually it means there isn't enough storage in the house.  but we are finding it adequate...maybe the previous owners just had too much stuff.   It's a little hard to see, but that toilet was powder blue...ugh.

what you see here is an ugly shower with wallpaper and border around it.  this is a terrible idea in a bathroom without a ceiling fan!
Our makeover isn't very exciting or amazing, but it's clean and simple.

the walls were painted a beige colour but it ended up being more off white.  The cupboard and trim were painted white.  We replaced the toilet with a low flow, and we love it!  David used the existing mirror and made a lovely frame for it out of inexpensive trim.  sadly, the light fixture remains due to budget constraints.

We removed the sliding doors and added a normal shower curtain instead.
As I said earlier, this isn't an amazing makeover.  But I'm so proud of it!  I love showing off the bathroom because it was the first project David and I did together.  And the state of the room before was terrible!!  I will admit that I'm a bit disappointed when people don't jump up and down with delight when they see my bathroom...but then I say it used to be wallpapered and have sliding shower doors.  They are usually a bit more impressed!

We still have some rooms we want to redo, but for now we have done the important ones. There is actually one really ugly room that we call "Ugly Bedroom" and have the door closed at all times.  That may be next on our list.

then&now: dining room

The dining room in our house isn't that big, but it feels like a big space because of it's openness.  st I thought it was a lot smaller when we first looked at it because it was so cluttered.  And I didn't even  know it had a window!

Here are the before pictures.

there was so much stuff in here that they couldn't even fit the table in properly!  and that cabinet on the right is hiding a gorgeous window.

The major change we did was to paint the walls brown.  I was so glad that David agreed to this because I think it's a major improvement over the nice, but boring beige walls.  We also put very little furniture in the room to keep it feeling light and open.

as you can see, all we have in here is our table and chairs and a plant

this is the window I didn't know we had until we moved in.  we put David's avocado plant here because it gets lots of natural light (yes, avocado! he grew it from seed).

I'm really pleased with our dining room now.  I think the brown paint is really classy, but cozy. And it picks up the dark knots in the wood paneling as seen in the above picture.  I especially love my big Morning Glory sign!  You can read it's "story" here

The next then&now I'll post is our main bathroom...check back soon!

then&now: master bedroom

Our house was in pretty good shape when we bought it.  The electrical was safe...the furnace was brand new...there were no structural issues.  But the d├ęcor was awful!!!  The house isn't very large (1800 square feet) but it was insanely cluttered by the pervious owners.  The living areas were painted a neutral colour but the bedrooms and bathrooms were unsightly.

This week I'll be posting pictures of what various rooms in our house now and the way they looked before.
Up today is the master bedroom.  I warn you, it was dated and frilly beforehand!

yucky green walls, awful ceiling fan and a lot of clutter would probably have been a turn off for most people.  Plus, this room is only 10x11 feet.

our "after" shot.  the walls have been painted a cream colour, we replaced the ceiling fan and have made the choice not to allow clutter in here.

I'd say the painting was the biggest challenge.  The ceilings start at 8 feet and extend to 14 feet, which means the walls are different heights too.  I did most of the painting because I enjoy it, but David had to finish the foot or so I couldn't reach around the high walls.  He was great about letting me pick colour!  I showed him a paint chip and he said to go ahead and get it.  We used 2 cans of paint here!

My next post will feature our bathroom...ugh. Here's a little teaser: blue toilet

PS-In case you need some more convincing of how sad the room was before.
